When would you write $$10 on a cheque?

Small amounts like $10 are commonly used for personal payments, small service fees, or casual transactions between individuals.

Writing $$10: Key Points to Remember

  • When writing $10 on a cheque, pay close attention to any zeros in the amount. Each zero must be clearly represented in the words line — omitting or adding zeros is one of the most common reasons banks reject cheques.
  • Since $10 is a round number with no cents, write the currency name after the words and draw a horizontal line to fill the remaining space on the amount line. This prevents anyone from adding additional digits.
  • Always double-check that the written amount matches the numeric amount in the box. Banks will honour the written words if there is a discrepancy.

How Banks Verify the $$10 Amount Line

Bank tellers verify cheque amounts by comparing the written words against the numeric box. For 10, ensure both match exactly. The written amount should read: Ten Dollars Only. Common rejection reasons include: misspelled number words, missing currency name, unclear handwriting, and discrepancies between the two amount fields.

Essential cheque writing rules

  • 1. Write the date in month, day, year format (e.g. March 13, 2019).
  • 2. You may post-date a cheque if you want it cashed only after that date.
  • 3. The amount in the dollar box must match the amount written in words.
  • 4. On the legal line, draw a line after the last word to prevent alterations.
  • 5. The memo line is optional (e.g. "School Fee").
  • 6. If you make a mistake, write VOID across the cheque and destroy it.
  • 7. Ensure your account has sufficient funds to cover the payment.
  • 8. Two parallel lines in the top-left corner mean the cheque must be deposited into a bank account, not cashed over the counter.
  • 9. Crossing out "or bearer" restricts payment to the named payee only.
  • 10. A banker's draft (cashier's cheque) is issued by the bank after you pay the amount plus fees — useful when the payee wants guaranteed funds.
