What is the cheque format in Hong Kong?
Writing a cheque in Hong Kong requires the payee name, date in DD/MM/YYYY format, numeric amount in HKD, and the cheque amount in words on the legal line. Hong Kong is unique in accepting bilingual cheques — the amount can be written in English (Two thousand five hundred and 75/100 dollars) or in formal Chinese uppercase characters using the 港幣…元正 format (e.g. 港幣貳仟伍佰柒拾伍元正 for HKD 2,575.00). Simplified numerals like 一二三 are not accepted; only formal uppercase characters such as 壹貳叁 are valid. Major banks including HSBC, Bank of China (BOCHK), and Hang Seng follow these conventions. Crossing a cheque with two parallel lines and writing Account Payee Only restricts payment to the named payee's account. Hong Kong banks honour the written amount over the numeric amount if there is a discrepancy.
